The Cornerstone Project

The Cornerstone Project will serve individuals and families experiencing homelessness or housing instability in Tangipahoa Parish. The project has four components that meet the needs of the community:

  • 50 hotel rooms to be used for short-term housing.

  • 24 one-bedroom affordable apartment units with wrap-around services for people with special needs.

  • A resource center serving as a social service hub that will help people move toward self-sufficiency.

  • Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) to provide on-site medical and behavioral health services.

Need Statement

The 2024 Point-In-Time (PIT) Count reflects 209 persons who are homeless on any given night, including 167 persons who are unsheltered. While unsheltered homelessness has more than tripled since 2020, shelter and housing resources have dwindled. There are currently no emergency shelterbeds in Tangipahoa Parish; the Hammond area has lost more than 85 shelter beds since 2022. Over the course of a year, approximately 1,500 people seek emergency assistance through the Coordinated Access and Assessment System (CAAS).

Funding

We are pleased to announce that funding has been secured for the Cornerstone Project. This critical investment marks a significant milestone in our commitment to providing comprehensive support services and a safe, stable environment for individuals and families in need.
